Weight Calculation Methods for Courier Services
Method
Description
The actual weight of the package is measured using a weighing scale. This is the most common method used by courier services.
This method is used when the package has a large volume but is relatively light. The volumetric weight is calculated based on the package’s length, width, and height. The formula for volumetric weight calculation varies between courier services.
Also known as billable weight, this method considers both the actual weight and the volumetric weight of the package. The higher of the two weights is used to calculate the shipping charges. This ensures that lightweight packages with large dimensions are charged appropriately.
Some courier services have a minimum weight requirement for packages. If the actual weight of the package is below this minimum weight, the minimum weight is still used for calculating the shipping charges.
Dead weight is used for certain types of shipments, such as documents or letters. It is a fixed weight assigned to these types of shipments, regardless of their actual or volumetric weight.
This method is used for large, lightweight packages. The cubic weight is calculated based on the package’s volume in cubic meters. The specific formula for cubic weight calculation may vary between courier services.
